Charles, known as the "China's Godfather in Internet Philanthropy" and "First Philanthropist in the Internet Industry", invested in founding Wuhan College without focusing on the returns, which pioneered the development of non-profit private university in China. He also led Tencent to create numerous innovative charity projects and became the first Internet entrepreneur who won the "China Charity Award", "the Most Caring Charity Model" of China Charity Award and ranked Top 10 of China's Philanthropists.
While leading the Tencent Group and making outstanding contribution to the industry and society, Charles also devoted great attention and passion in public philanthropy, not only personally involved in social welfare activities, but also lead the strategic planning of Tencent’s corporate social responsibility, and actively promoted in-depth integration of Internet platform and public philanthropy. Charles also devoted his heart and soul to the conservation of minority culture.He has sponsored the publishing of Miao Costume, Miao Embroidery, Guizhou Primitive Folk Song and other intangible cultural heritage projects with great significance of inheritance.
In September 2006, Charles and the team of Tencent Founders proposed to launch Tencent Charity Foundation, the first charity foundation in China’s Internet industry, with the hope in changing the charity world with innovative Internet service, and open the Internet era of charity.
In June 2015, the total initial investment in Wuhan College exceeded RMB2 billion, mainly for construction of new campus and faculties, making the college became one of the private charity universities in China with the largest investment amount.
In January 2015, donated RMB20 million for book purchase and construction of the Wuhan College Library.
Won the “China Children Charity Award – Touching Spring Buds” presented by the All China Women's Federation and the China Children and Teenagers’Fund.
Honored as “the Most Caring Charity Model” at the 8th China Charity Award, and became the first Internet entrepreneur receiving the China Philanthropy Award.
In June 2013, donated RMB30 million to build a new library in Zhongnan University of Economics and Law Wuhan College.
In March 2013, donated a seed fund of RMB10 million, and initiated the establishment of “Chen Yidan Charity (Shenzhen) Foundation” in Shenzhen.
Donated RMB13.5 million through the China Children and Teenagers’Fund, to construct Tianxin Middle School High School Department Ciying Building, and donated RMB1.5 million to set up “Ciying Scholarship”.
Donated RMB10 million to set up “Chen Yidan Prize” in Zhongnan University of Economics and Law Wuhan College.
